Of course, they are your pets – first and foremost.  They are the cats, dogs, parrots, Koi, goldfish and horses.  They are your special friends and so they become ours as well.

Pets react to their owners’ absence in multiple ways.  The ideal, of course, is that they’re happy to see their caregiver and are content and playful in her company.

Reality is sometimes different.  For example, owners are often surprised by their cat’s reaction to their extended absence.  For two or three days kitty may remain independent or even quite shy with her caregiver.  …and you’re right, some of them will never come out from a secret hiding place.  Some cats allow their monumental curiosity to take over and they will carefully investigate us.  It’s often true that once they break that barrier they completely reverse the situation.  There have been times when kitties have loudly protested our leaving!!

Dogs are generally much more willing to show their feelings about the situation.  Many who are shy when meeting us at first, become bonded to us quite quickly after you’ve gone.  Sometimes there are issues around whether they will eat or remain calm.  Pet anxiety seems to be the concern we need to address most often.  Of course your pup doesn’t have a clue about where you are – or even if you’re coming back.  Plenty of play, lots of walks and affection generally lessens their unease.

We haven’t yet developed a way to discuss feelings with the fish.  We just try to keep following their usual routine as closely as possible.  It is remarkable, though…over a little time Koi and even goldfish seem to recognize that we are the bringers of food.  That gets a reaction!

Here is where it becomes apparent that professional in-home care is so beneficial to your pet.  It's quieter, more secure and attention is only divided amongst the animals who always live there.

Overall, the point is that we listen and watch – compare notes and check with one another about changes in behavior.  The pets generally thrive – and that, is our greatest pleasure.
